Tim Sparks

Celebrating Tim Sparks (10/31/1954), a Twin Cities primitive, orchestral, post-modern, eclectic guitarist from Winston-Salem, NC. Sparks studied at the North Carolina School of the Arts with Jesus Silva. In the early 70s, Sparks visited guitarist Tony Hauser in the Twin Cities and eventually moved here. He covers jazz styles from Brazilian to Bebop, and in 1993 won the National Fingerstyle Guitar Championship for his adaptation of The Nutcracker Suite by Tchaikovsky. Tim is also immersed in Greek and Klezmer ethnic music and spent time studying Fado and Portuguese guitar in Lisbon. In association with American composer John Zorn, he has recorded four  CDs of Jewish Klezmer music and earned a McKnight Fellowship.

I'm an expatriate Memphis musician and an instructor at a private music college in Minnesota. I find a greater clarity in my appreciation for music from Memphis and the Mississippi Delta region, now that I've lived away from it for decades, than when I was growing up in the midst of it.
