For Americana godfather David Bromberg, it all began with the blues. A musician’s musician, Bromberg’s mastery of several stringed instruments (guitar, fiddle, Dobro, mandolin), and multiple styles remains a marvel; amped electric lead – both slide and fretted – and delicately powerful acoustic fingerpicking propel these songs with the same force that made him the go-to guy for acts ranging from the Eagles to Link Wray to Phoebe Snow. His incredible journey spans five-and-a-half decades, and includes adventures with Bob Dylan, George Harrison, Jerry Garcia, and Reverend Gary Davis, who claimed the young Bromberg as a son. Although he remains the proprietor of the beloved David Bromberg Fine Violins in Wilmington, Delaware he makes time to tour with his quintet.

Fingerstyle Guitar Deluxe ft. Pat Donohue and Jerry Kosak

Saturday, May 11, 2019 at 7:30 pm

Northfield Arts Guild Theater

411 Third Street W.

Northfield, MN 55057

$25.00

Jerry Kosak was selected as a 2019 recipient of a MN State Arts Board Grant and is presenting a guitar double-header with Prairie Home alumni Pat Donohue at a number of perfect listening venues around the state. They’ll play at the James J. Hill house in St. Paul in June.

Grammy award-winning finger-picker Pat Donohue’s devotion to acoustic guitar has made him an American standard, as he echoes the tones of Robert Johnson, Blind Blake, Merle Travis or Muddy Waters. Chet Atkins called Pat one of the greatest fingerpickers in the world today; Leo Kottke called his playing “haunting.”

The guitar music of Jerry Kosak has incorporated the structure and complexity of classical, the soul and passion of the blues, the happiness and drive of Americana, and the groove and swing of R&B and jazz. His music has been described as a fusion of rhythmic drumming, grooving bass lines, and thoughtfully disjointed melodies, producing “a great reflection of many different styles” according to Kevin Barnes of KBEM Jazz 88.

The first Showcase Series concerts feature the outstanding graduate students from the guitar program at the University of Minnesota, headed by Prof. Maja Radovanlija.

Momčilo Moma Aleksandrić is a Serbian guitarist currently pursuing his doctorate degree at the University of Minnesota under the mentorship of Prof. Maja Radovanlija. Since winning first prize at the 2018 Hong Kong Altamira International Guitar Symposium, he has received invitations for performances in China, Australia, Costa Rica, Thailand, Serbia, and elsewhere.

Filip Živanović was born in Belgrade, Serbia. Since 2003, he has given solo recitals and performed across Europe and the US, and won over 30 first prizes at national and international competitions. In 2010, he enrolled at the University of Belgrade School of Music.
